5 major aspects

The fundamental connections that shape your personality and life

Conjunction

Neutral

The most powerful aspect. Two planets merge at one point, amplifying each other's energies. The result depends on planetary nature: Venus + Jupiter brings generosity and luck in love; Mars + Saturn creates powerful but blocked energy. A conjunction concentrates force in one life area, creating a point of maximum intensity in the chart.

Sextile

60°Harmonious

A gentle harmonious aspect. Creates talents and opportunities, but -- unlike the trine -- requires conscious activation. A sextile is a door that doesn't open by itself: you need to pull the handle. It connects compatible elements (fire-air, earth-water), enabling smooth planetary interaction. A talent that unfolds through effort.

Square

90°Tense

The most dynamic aspect. Creates internal tension, conflict between two life areas, a feeling of being 'torn apart.' But squares are the main driver of growth. Without them, a chart lacks energy for change. People with many squares often achieve more than those with charts full of trines, because tension forces action.

Trine

120°Harmonious

Natural harmony. Planets in a trine occupy signs of the same element and support each other effortlessly. Innate talents that feel natural are often the result of trines. The flip side: too many trines can create laziness and passivity, because everything comes easily and there's no motivation to develop.

Opposition

180°Tense

Polarization, a seesaw between two opposing principles. An opposition creates the feeling that two important things can't be done simultaneously: career vs. family, freedom vs. intimacy. It's often projected onto a partner -- you see in another person what you don't acknowledge in yourself. The key to an opposition is balance, not choosing one side.

Major vs. minor aspects

Major (Ptolemaic)
  • Conjunction 0°, Sextile 60°, Square 90°, Trine 120°, Opposition 180°
  • Form the core of personality
  • Clearly visible in life events
  • Wider orbs (up to 8-10°)
  • Starting point for any chart reading
Minor
  • Semi-sextile 30°, Quincunx 150°, Quintile 72°, Semi-square 45°
  • Subtle nuances of personality
  • Background influences
  • Narrow orbs (1-2°)
  • For advanced analysis

Orbs: tight vs. wide aspects

An orb is the allowable deviation from an exact aspect angle. A perfect square is exactly 90°, but a square with an orb of 5° (85° or 95°) is still valid -- just weaker. The tighter the orb, the more powerfully the aspect manifests in life.

Tight aspects (0-2°) are the most powerful. They dominate the chart and define core personality traits. These are aspects you feel every day. Medium orbs (3-5°) form the background of character -- noticeable but not overwhelming. Wide orbs (6-8°) are subtle influences that activate only during transits or progressions.

The Sun and Moon are given larger orbs (up to 10°) because they are the most powerful luminaries. Other planets typically use orbs of 6-8° for major aspects. Minor aspects require tight orbs of 1-2° to be considered significant.

Harmonious or tense -- which is better?

Harmonious
Trines & sextiles

Natural talents, easy flow, comfort. But too many harmonious aspects without squares can lead to passivity -- when everything comes easily, there's no drive to push further.

Tense
Squares & oppositions

Inner conflict, pressure, restlessness. But this tension is the engine of achievement. Most accomplished people have strong squares. The energy needs a conscious outlet -- then it becomes your greatest strength.

The best chart is a balanced one: harmonious aspects provide the foundation, tense aspects provide the motivation.
